Often the subject of party jokes, snoring can turn into a serious matter when your partner keeps you awake all night with their loud snoring noises .In extreme cases, it can even result in you and your partner sleeping in separate rooms. Just what are the snoring facts? What are the causes of snoring? Snoring can be easily defined as noisy breathing when one is sleeping, caused by the rush of air through the narrow passageway between the nose and throat. When sleeping, these muscles are more relaxed, and therefore take up more space. As a result, the incoming air is forced to move faster causing vibration sounds as it hits the internal respiratory structures, better known as snoring. Anything that would help these throat muscles to relax, would therefore be a contributing factor to snoring, Some probable causes would be: Being overweight - there will be more fatty tissue in the throat which results in a narrow breathing passageway Physical characteristics - such as large tonsils and larg adenoids. Having a deviated septum. Allergies - suffering from allergic reactions from substances such as pet hair, dust and even stuffed toys can irriate the breathing passageway. Smoking - cigar or cigarette smoke could irritate the muscle linings of the nasal passageway Alcohol and/or drugs - these substances can cause the throat muscles to relax and may also cause the tongue to relax and fall back into the narow air passageway, which in turn causes snoring. Sleeping position - it has been shown that more people snore when they sleep on their backs than on their side or belly. Stuffy nose - brought on by a cold or sinuses. Less air goes through the passageway, so more air has to be sucked in through the mouth Sleep apnea - although for most people, snoring is not a serious health concern, there is one that is a serious health issue - a condition known as sleep apnea - when a sleeping person has bouts of interrupted breathing where he/she is not able to breathe enough air and shows signs of choking and will wake up multiple times during the night. If this is present, consult your doctor. As seen from the above list of snoring facts, there can be a variety of factors that cause snoring. But most of these can be easily remedied by following a well-thought out plan once the initial cause is determined.
